A resolved analysis of cold dust and gas in the nearby edge-on spiral NGC 891

Abstract: We investigate the connection between dust and gas in the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891, a target of the Very Nearby Galaxies Survey. High resolution Herschel PACS and SPIRE 70, 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 μm images are combined with JCMT SCUBA 850 μm observations to trace the far-infrared/submillimetre spectral energy distribution (SED). Maps of the Hi 21 cm line and CO(J = 3−2) emission trace the atomic and molecular hydrogen gas, respectively. We fit one-component modified blackbody models to the int… Show more

“…The exponential distribution of the dust has been proven adequate to describe the vertical distribution of dust in a galaxy's disk (e.g., Verstappen et al 2013;Hughes et al 2014). The effect of a twophase dust medium with clumpy dust features is studied and discussed in Sect.…”

“…It will also be of specific interest to compare the dust heating fraction derived from the radiative transfer modeling to the fractions from diffuse versus clumpy media derived from multi-component dust models and SED fitting tools (e.g., Noll et al 2009;da Cunha et al 2010), and empirical color analyses (e.g., Bendo et al 2010Bendo et al , 2012aBendo et al , 2014Galametz et al 2010;Boquien et al 2011;Hughes et al 2014). …”

“…As there is a known degeneracy between β and T dust (see e.g. Hughes et al 2014;Tabatabaei et al 2014;Galametz et al 2012;Smith et al 2012b, and references therein), this could explain the scatter in the relation. Furthermore, most of the pixels in Paper II had β < 2.…”

“…In particular, a modified black body can be fitted to the observed FIR (λ > 100 µm) data extracted from sub-kpc regions in galaxies (see e.g. Smith et al 2010;Hughes et al 2014). While still a step forward with respect to previous works, this approach inevitably suffers from some simplifications.…”

“…: C. D. Wilson; see e.g. Parkin et al 2013Parkin et al , 2014Schirm et al 2014;Hughes et al 2014) is a Herschel Guaranteed Time Key Project that aims to study the gas and dust in the ISM of a diverse sample of 13 nearby galaxies with Herschel's PACS and SPIRE instruments (see Pilbratt et al 2010;Poglitsch et al 2010;Griffin et al 2010). This survey provides a unique dataset for investigating the spatially resolved [N] 205 µm line emission.…”
