The Effect of Genre-Specific Strategy Instruction on the Writing Achievement of Fourth-Grade Students

The quality of writing instruction is the primary determinant of writing acquisition. Revising and feedback are crucial aspects of the writing process. In this study, genre-specific strategy instruction was used as part of feedback and revision to develop the text structure and content of different text types in fourth grade. The study also examined whether the effect differed based on the genre and students' gender. Thirty students' first and final drafts of opinion, expository, and argumentative texts were analyzed using rubrics for each type of genre. The results revealed no significant difference between female and male students' achievement in any different genres, but using this approach significantly affects students' total achievement in writing. Students' average persuasiveness in opinion and argumentative writing was not developed well when thinking about the genre elements in developing text structure and content. Writing expository texts achieved the highest scores. Strategy instruction for explicit guidance on the structure of the genre and using genre-specific criteria to revise draft texts are important writing strategies to raise the quality of writing.

Glogging in the ESP Classroom: Developing Tourism Studies Students’ EFL Persuasive Writing

Tourism discourse is highly persuasive. To succeed in their future careers, university students majoring in Tourism Studies should therefore be able to write persuasively in English. This study investigated the effect of glogging on developing EFL persuasive writing in such learners. Participants (N = 16) were second-year students in the Tourism Studies Department, Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, University of Sadat City, during the second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. An EFL persuasive writing test was developed and administered before and after experimentation, which lasted for 9 weeks. During this time, students used glogging collaboratively to create online interactive posters via the web-based tool Glogster EDU. They wrote tourist advertisements and persuasive essays. The results revealed that the study group achieved significant improvement in EFL persuasive writing. Using Glogster EDU was fundamental in helping students to organize, synthesize, revise, edit, and enrich their work with appropriate visuals, persuasive vocabulary, and grammatically correct and appealing phrases or sentences until they published their final drafts. Thus, glogging had a positive effect on developing Tourism Studies students' EFL persuasive writing.

Yazma eğitimine yönelik çalışmaların günümüzde sıklığının arttığı ve alan yazında önemli çalışmaların yapıldığı görülmektedir. Bunun sonucunda çalışma alanlarının genişlediği görülen yazma eğitimi araştırmalarının sonuçlarının, uygulamaya yönelik olarak ortaya çıkarılması bir gereklilik hâlini almıştır. Yazma eğitiminde karşılaşılan sorunların azaltılabilmesi ve yazma eğitiminin niteliğinin artırılabilmesi amacıyla yazma eğitimi sürecine bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşılması gerekmektedir. Bu çerçevede yürütülen araştırmanın amacı, yazma becerisini geliştirmeye yönelik gerçekleştirilen bilimsel makalelerin bütüncül bir bakış açısıyla incelenmesidir. Betimleyici nitel bir yöntemle yürütülen araştırmanın verilerine ulaşmak için farklı materyallerin gözden geçirilmesi ve değerlendirilmesi amacıyla kullanılan doküman incelemesinden faydalanılmıştır. Araştırma kapsamında yazma becerisini geliştirmeye yönelik üretilen makaleler veri kaynağı olarak belirlenmiş, söz konusu makalelerin tespitinde ULAKBİM tarafından oluşturulan TR Dizinde taranan dergiler esas alınmıştır. TR Dizin platformunda yapılan taramada 31.12.2022 tarihine kadar yayımlanmış ve çalışma kapsamına uygun olan makaleler esas alınmıştır. Yapılan taramada “yazı, yazma, yazma eğitimi, yazma becerisi, yazma yöntemleri, yazma teknikleri, yazma modelleri, betimleyici yazma, eleştirel yazma, ikna edici yazma, tartışmacı yazma, yaratıcı yazma, öyküleyici yazma, bilgilendirici yazma, şiir yazma” gibi kavramlar kullanılmıştır. Tarama sonucunda toplam 231 makale inceleme sürecine dâhil edilmiş, araştırmanın amaçları etrafında belirlenen 161 makale ile analiz sürecine geçilmiştir. Araştırmada betimsel analiz ve içerik analizi teknikleri bir arada kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın öne çıkan bulgularında incelenen makalelerin genellikle belirli dergilerde yayımlandığı; uygulamalı yazma eğitimi makalelerinin özellikle 2012 yılından başlayarak 2022 yılına kadar daha çok sayıda çalışmanın yapıldığı, makalelerde genellikle ana dili öğretiminin hedef alındığı ve çoğunlukla Türkçe yayımlandığı, ağırlıklı olarak yaratıcı yazmanın kullanıldığı, genellikle nicel yöntemlerin benimsendiği, katılımcı grubu olarak ortaokul seviyesindeki öğrencilere yönelik çalışmaların öne çıktığı ve çalışmaların çoğunun sonucunda yazma başarısı ve akademik başarının geliştiği belirlenmiştir.
