“…Truckload transportation is the workhorse of many companies typically culminating in a high-spend category. Procurement decisions in this area are also central to supply chain strategies that involve transitioning from an efficiency focus to a responsiveness one (Richey & Davis-Sramek, 2022a). Thus, supply chain scholars should expand their understanding of this key activity.…”

A literature review chronicles conceptual and empirical achievements within a research stream. An excellent literature review accomplishes much more. Excellent literature reviews not only explain advances within a research stream ("summarize and synthesize") but also provide a conceptual framework that captures the key elements of the research ("conceptualize") and lay a foundation for future inquiry that can accelerate progress in advancing knowledge ("energize"). We accomplish two main tasks in this editorial. First, we offer details about what constitutes an excellent literature review. Second, we summarize the four literature reviews contained in this special topic forum and explain their excellent features.

“…We suspect that in the long term, SCEE will deliver cost savings, but the savings may happen in areas (e.g., reduced inventory costs) that are not central to the firm's current approach. To the degree this occurs, ConsumerCo could compete on responsiveness and cost (Goldsby et al, 2006; Richey & Davis‐Sramek, 2022)—akin to having its proverbial “cake and eating it too.”…”

“…Cost driven by efficiency and cost minimization strategies is ConsumerCo's primary competitive lever throughout all facets of its supply chain operations. While efficiency and cost minimization will remain important dimensions, senior supply chain managers recognize the need to develop stronger customer responsiveness. The pursuit of greater responsiveness is a sector‐wide trend—responsiveness is essentially “the new competitive imperative for CPGs” (Gurski, 2020) perhaps indicative of a broader strategic shift from cost efficiency to responsiveness as a primary means for supply chains to create value (Richey & Davis‐Sramek, 2022).…”
The recently introduced concept of supply chain entrepreneurial embeddedness (SCEE) refers to the extent to which large firms integrate entrepreneurial capabilities into their supply chains. Achieving a higher degree of SCEE can involve assimilating entrepreneurial practices by copying entrepreneurial firms’ behavior, allying with entrepreneurial firms to gain access to and learn from them, and acquiring entrepreneurial firms to bring their practices inside the firm. Because SCEE appears to be a pathway to enhanced firm performance, enhancing SCEE should be attractive. However, our thesis is that efforts to do so may be undermined by cognitive biases—heuristics used by the human mind to simplify complex situations that result in distorted thinking. We explore the possible problems arising due to 11 cognitive biases discussed by Schwenk (Strategic Management Journal, 1984, 5(2), 111). We offer two brief case examples of companies that are seeking to make their supply chains more entrepreneurial; each illustrates several of the biases in action. We also consider whether supply chain complexity and entrepreneurial orientation can mitigate or strengthen cognitive biases’ harmful effects on SCEE. In doing so, we construct an important interface across entrepreneurship and supply chain management.
“…From the world of transportation, Balthrop et al (2023) bring us “How do trucking companies respond to announced versus unannounced safety crackdowns? The case of government inspection blitzes.” This paper embraces our ongoing call for policy research (see: Richey & Davis‐Sramek, 2022a, 2022b). The authors investigate how motor carriers respond to changes in the likelihood of regulation via inspections.…”

The dawn of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform logistics and supply chain management radically. However, this promising innovation is met with a scholarly discourse grappling with an interplay between the promising capabilities and potential drawbacks. This conversation frequently includes dystopian forecasts of mass unemployment and detrimental repercussions concerning academic research integrity. Despite the current hype, existing research exploring the intersection between AI and the logistics and supply chain management (L&SCM) sector remains limited. Therefore, this editorial seeks to fill this void, synthesizing the potential applications of AI within the L&SCM domain alongside an analysis of the implementation challenges. In doing so, we propose a robust research framework as a primer and roadmap for future research. This will give researchers and organizations comprehensive insights and strategies to navigate the complex yet promising landscape of AI integration within the L&SCM domain.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
