A reported death case of a novel bunyavirus in Shanghai, China

Abstract: This paper describes the first case of infection with a recently described novel bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), in Shanghai, China. The case is originally from Chizhou City, Anhui province within an endemic area for SFTSV. We describe the etiology, epidemiological characteristics, clinical diagnosis and treatment of this fatal case. This case is unique because major cause of death was renal failure, whereas other reported cases have been due to hemorrhage. The investigat… Show more

“…Haemaphysalis longicornis is an important vector of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens that impact on medical and veterinary health worldwide [ 1 ]. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) virus is a tick-borne virus transmitted by H. longicornis and included in the family Bunyaviridae (genus Phlebovirus) [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ].…”

“…A disease similar to SFTS has been reported in Missouri, U.S.A [6]. This life-threatening disease can affect people at any age [7][8][9][10][11]. Importantly, human-to-human transmission of SFTSV was documented in a family cluster in China [12].…”

“…However, little is known about the epidemiology of SFTS in the eastern coastal region of China [10,11]. Ningbo is located close to eastern coast of China and south-east corner of the Yangtze River, and belongs to a north subtropical monsoon climate zone with an annual average temperature of 16.4 • C.…”
