THE COMPLEX and often circular nature of interrelationships between education and social policy poses a distinct challenge for both the investigator and the reviewer. Recognizing the contributions of intensive smallscale investigations as well as comprehensive ones, the reviewer has included both types of studies. Since much of the literature in the area under consideration is characterized by expressions of opinion, by statements based on a given value system, and by debate and reference to precedent, an attempt has been made to include materials which present an objective appraisal of significant issues. Literature concerned with an examination of the equality of educational opportunity is surveyed first. This section is followed by considerations of church-school relations, the impact on education of actions by federal government, and programs in international education. A final section includes distinctive studies which examine the influence of specific social, political, and economic factors on education.
