A Report on 15 Years of Clinical Negligence Claims in Rhinology

Abstract: This is the first study to report the outcomes of negligence claims in rhinology in the United Kingdom. Claims in rhinology are associated with a high success rate. Steps that can be taken to reduce litigation include careful patient workup and ensuring adequate informed consent. Where there is a suspicion of orbital damage early recognition and intervention is needed to reduce long-term injury to the patient.

Twenty cases of iatrogenic orbital injuries were included.…”

“…Therefore, any potential for fewer surgical complications associated with the endoscopic septoplasty technique may be worthwhile in considering and exploring further in future studies. 44 Furthermore, with competency-based education becoming more prominent within medical education, evaluating trainee competency in various approaches to septoplasty will be necessary. 45 In the study by Paradis and Rotenberg, 30 the endoscopic septoplasty technique was also associated with a significantly shorter operative time (mean difference, 28 minutes).…”

“…11 In addition, to a lesser extent, errors in diagnosis, such as missed diagnoses, are the second most common of rhinology-related litigation. 12 This, taken together with the improved outcomes with early intervention and the negative impact on quality of life with a late diagnosis, prompts a reexamination of the true value of histopathologic analysis in elective nasal surgery. Nevertheless, based on the literature and our own institution's experience, routine histopathologic review of all specimens in elective nasal surgery, indeed, is not cost effective and should be considered on a case-by-case basis.…”
