A Report of Triploid Populus of the Section Aigeiros

Abstract: 69 several cases, for example A. auriculiformis in Thailand (LUANGVIRIYASAENG and PINYOPUSARERK, 1998). Build-up of inbreeding through self-fertilization occurring in isolated trees or poorly-flowering stands used for seed collection over successive generations, and the associated depression of vigour that we have demonstrated in this study, could explain this phenomenon. 185-195 (1996) Acknowledgments AbstractThis screening study analyzed ploidy levels by counting the chromosome number of 61 Aigeiros cultiv… Show more

“…Triploid poplar clones, derived from 2n gametes, in section Populus and in section Aigeiros display faster growth over the normal diploids and are widely used in poplar plantation (ZHU et al, 1995;ZHANG et al, 2004;KANG et al, 2006). 2n pollen is a basic material for poplar sexual polyploidization.…”

“…Natural triploids often occur in the genus Populus, and have been widely used in forestation and forestry production (ZHANG et al, 2004). These natural triploid hybrids are presumably due to the production of numerically unreduced pollen (ZHU et al, 1998;ZHANG et al, 2004).…”

“…These natural triploid hybrids are presumably due to the production of numerically unreduced pollen (ZHU et al, 1998;ZHANG et al, 2004). Studies on the genetic control of unreduced pollen and the techniques for discovering producers of a higher frequency of unreduced pollen will provide a platform for the genetic improvement and triploid breeding of P. euphratica.…”

“…Some triploid poplar cultivars, demonstrating advantages in growth, biomass production and pulpwood properties, have been widely used in plantations (Weisgerber et al 1980;Zhu et al 1995;Zhang et al 2004;Zhang et al 2005). Therefore, production of triploids has been of concern for the last several decades.…”
