A report of rare adverse tissue reaction to Ethilon® Nylon Suture

Abstract: This report describes a rare severe tissue reaction, as demonstrated in clinical photographs, to nylon sutures and illustrates how simple immediate removal of sutures isolates the irritant stimulus and results in rapid resolution, without the risk, cost and inconvenience of antibiotic treatment.

“…It is possible that the tissue reaction resulted from the nylon sutures used to fixate the weight to the tarsal plate, though this is extremely rare given the frequency of which nylon sutures are used. 5 Further the edema and inflammatory tissue was centered over the weight at time of removal (Figure 1C).…”

“…Early suture removal results in avoiding unwanted suture related complications. 21 Our limitations are; it was a single center study with small sample size and it lacked comparison. In future, comparison of sclerotomy closure using releasable suture knot with conventional knot by employing different suture materials can be done.…”

“…Nylon sutures are commercially sold under different brands such as Johnson & Johnson ETHILON® and RESORBA NYLON. According to the area of the nature and individuality of humans, there is one rare adverse tissue reaction to the nylon suture (ETHILON®) 51 . ETHILON® has high tensile strength, good elasticity, and low tissue reaction.…”

“…The suture was immediately removed, and after a week, the tissue reaction was relieved with no further treatment (Figure 3(B)). 51 There is no literature report regarding the adverse skin reaction to the nylon sutures, and the majority of the nylon suture reaction cases was recorded in the early 1990s 51 …”
