Nowadays, there is a significant trend away from solvent-based polyurethane systems towards waterborne polyurethane dispersions due to government regulations requiring manufacturers to lower total volatile organic compounds, as well as consumer preference for more environmentally friendly products. In this work, a renewable vegetable oil-based polyol derived from jatropha oil was polymerized with isophorone diisocyanate and dimethylol propionic acid to produce anionic waterborne polyurethane dispersion. Free standing films with up to 62 wt.% bio-based content were successfully produced after evaporation of water from the jatropha oil-based waterborne polyurethane (JPU) dispersion, which indicated good film formation. The chemical and thermo-mechanical properties of the JPU films were characterized. By increasing the OH numbers of polyol from 161 mgKOH/g to 217 mgKOH/g, the crosslinking density of the JPU was significantly increased, which lead to a better storage modulus and improved hydrophobicity. Overall, JPU produced from polyol having OH number of 217 mgKOH/g appears to be a promising product for application as a binder for wood and decorative coatings.

This paper provides an overview of the recent progress in research and development dealing with polymers derived from plant oils. It highlights the widening interest in novel approaches to the synthesis, characterization, and properties of these materials from renewable resources and emphasizes their growing impact on sustainable macromolecular science and technology. The monomers used include unmodified triglycerides, their fatty acids or the corresponding esters, and chemically modified triglycerides and fatty acid esters. Comonomers include styrene, divinylbenzene, acrylics, furan derivatives, epoxides, etc. The synthetic pathways adopted for the preparation of these materials are very varied, going from traditional free radical and cationic polymerizations to polycondensation reactions, as well as metatheses and Diels–Alder syntheses. In addition to this general appraisal, the specific topic of the use of tung oil as a source of original polymers, copolymers, and (nano)composites is discussed in greater detail in terms of mechanisms, structures, properties, and possible applications.

Methyl oleate, a kind of vegetable oil derivatives, was used as the raw material to synthesize novel polyols containing nitrogen and phosphorus (PNP) by three steps: amidaion, epoxidation, and ring-opening reaction. The structure of the ensuing PNP was characterized by gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Then, polyurethane films were prepared by mixing the resulting polyols (PNP) and poly-(tetra methylene glycol) with isophorone diisocyanate in different proportions. After that, the thermostability of polyurethane films was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetry, and cone calorimeter test. Similarly, mechanical property of polyurethane films was studied by tensile test. The results showed that as the amount of PNP increased, the tensile strength of polyurethane films increased from 2.0 to 13.5 MPa, the LOI values of polyurethane films went up from 20.1% to 25.5%. Moreover, the initial decomposition temperature of polyurethane films improved from 280 to 312 C and the total heat release drooped from 32.2 to 21.7 kW/m 2 without adding any other flame retardant. Therefore, it was observed that the polyurethane films have superior thermal stability and mechanical property and appear suitable for a wide range of applications.
