The Korba aquifer is located in the east of the Cape Bon peninsula in Tunisia. A large groundwater depression has been created in the central part of the aquifer since the 1980s, due to intense groundwater pumping for irrigation. The data collected show that the situation continues to deteriorate. Consequently, seawater is continuing to invade a large part of the aquifer. To better understand the situation and try to forecast its evolution, a three-dimensional (3D) transient density-dependent groundwater model has been developed. The model building process was difficult because of data required on groundwater discharge from thousands of unmonitored private wells. To circumvent that difficulty, indirect exhaustive information including remote sensing data and the physical parameters of the aquifer have been used in a multi-linear regression framework. The resulting 3D model shows that the aquifer is over-exploited. It also shows that after 50 years of exploitation, the time needed to turn back to the natural situation would be about 150 years if the authorities would ban all exploitation now. Such an asymmetry in the time scales required to contaminate or remediate an aquifer is an important characteristic of coastal aquifers that must be taken into account in their management.

This article retrieved the vegetation water content equivalent water thickness (EWT) information and the relevant parameters for the land surface from full-band TM remote sensing data. The effects of surface water heat flux and surface covering on the EWT were analyzed via studies of the regional land cover status and the combined EWT with land surface parameters. This article also analyzed the roles and limitations of EWT in drought monitoring combined with classification of the regional drought and regional water stress index (RWSI). From the results, the following conclusions were reported. (1) The spatial distribution of the EWT is closely related to the vegetation, and the EWT is able to monitor the regional water conditions to a certain extent. (2) The distribution of the EWT is affected significantly by the density of vegetation cover, land surface temperature and evapo-transpiration. (3) The correlation between the NDVI (or fractional vegetation cover) and the EWT differs under different vegetation coverage conditions. (4) The evapo-transpiration of the ecological environment is closely tied to the EWT such that the changes in evapo-transpiration affect the EWT significantly. (5) The ability of the EWT to monitor regional drought is conditional, and therefore no significant indication exists that can be used to monitor moderate to severe drought conditions.

Measurements of thermal radiation at infrared wavelengths (7 to 14 µm) yield much information about the land surface. The primary use of these observations is for surface temperature determination as the emissivity is usually close to one. For this purpose, it is fortuitous that the peak in the thermal emission occurs in an atmospheric transmission window. In addition, there are variations in the emissivity of minerals and soils in the 7–14 µm region, which can be interpreted for identification purposes. These also produce significant emissivity variations for arid or desert areas, where there are considerable exposed soils and rocks. The emissivity for vegetative canopies has been found to be close to one, with little spectral variation. Applications of the derived surface temperature to study the surface energy balance and to estimate the energy fluxes from the land surface are discussed.
