A Remote Health Monitoring System for the Elderly Based on Smart Home Gateway

Abstract: This paper proposed a remote health monitoring system for the elderly based on smart home gateway. The proposed system consists of three parts: the smart clothing, the smart home gateway, and the health care server. The smart clothing collects the elderly's electrocardiogram (ECG) and motion signals. The home gateway is used for data transmission. The health care server provides services of data storage and user information management; it is constructed on the Windows-Apache-MySQL-PHP (WAMP) platform and is te… Show more

“…The third category of home-based ECG monitoring involves elderly monitoring; several systems have been developed, among which include [24,[113][114][115]. Mena et al [115] proposed a mobile personal elderly health monitoring for automated classification of ECG signals using machine learning techniques.…”

“…As a result, ECG monitoring systems have been developed and widely used in the healthcare sector for the past few decades and have significantly evolved over time due to the emergence of smart enabling technologies [10][11][12][13]. Nowadays, ECG monitoring systems are used in hospitals [14][15][16][17], homes [18][19][20], outpatient ambulatory settings [21][22][23], and in remote contexts [24]. They also employ a wide range of technologies such as IoT [25][26][27], edge computing [28,29], and mobile computing [30][31][32].…”

“…For the health care systems, this is considered as a big challenge [8], these health care systems need to deal with the health issues of the elderly population [3,[5][6][7][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. In order to develop effective health systems, they must be able to deal with the so-called "four giants" of geriatrics (Isaacs) as: instability, immobility, intellectual impairment and incontinence.…”

“…Shows the Architecture health monitoring system[9].Gogate and Bakal in[49] presented a healthcare model using WSN to remove limitations of wired system and to utilize wireless technology efficiently. The system continuously screens the patient's body temperature and heart rate and when detecting any abnormal parameter, sending email alert or sms to the physician, nurse and close relative of the patient for emergency handling.…”
