A relative-value-based system for calculating faculty productivity in teaching, research, administration, and patient care

Abstract: This system provides a quantitative method for the equal recognition of faculty productivity in a number of areas, and it may be useful as a starting point for other academic units exploring similar issues.

“…Hilton and colleagues developed a base unit for each area of productivity (clinical, teaching, research and administration) and adjusted them so that the total points for the presumed productivity of a ''top producer'' in each of the areas would be equal. 16 Cramer and colleagues proceeded by agreeing on a relative-value unit for clinical productivity (using a specific billing level) and then determined equal points for equal effort in the other areas by committee consensus. 6 Others developed scales that focused on one area only, such as teaching.…”

“…Design and testing of a simple spreadsheet-based system was described for calculation of faculty productivity in a number of areas, including teaching. 9 A computerized spreadsheet model that estimates teaching and educational administration has been used for faculty time management and career development, department planning, budget planning, clinical scheduling, and mission cost accounting. 10 Moore et al 11 used PDAs as part of a study on delivery of medical education.…”

“…The literature is sparse with respect to describing academic and research productivity standards across the medical and biomedical science disciplines. 23,24 Despite this, we felt it necessary to define what could reasonably be considered by these professional peer groups as significant research productivity to determine what portions of the rehabilitation community are successfully contributing to the rehabilitation research enterprise and which groups are more likely to encounter barriers when participating in rehabilitation research. However, our definition of this productivity metric was arbitrary and may be subject to change as understanding and perspectives about capacity needs and goals develop.…”
