The basic principle of underground oil storage in unlined rock caverns is that the groundwater pressure surrounding the caverns should be higher than the storage cavern pressure, and the groundwater should flow into caverns to prevent oil leakages (Hassanpour et al., 2019; Lin et al., 2016).
