Abstract-A novel polarization reconfigurable planar lowprofile antenna is presented. The antenna consists of an electronically reconfigurable polarizer and a slot antenna. The polarizer is loaded by PIN diodes and by changing the states of the PIN diodes, the linearly polarized (LP) wave generated by the slot antenna can be converted to either right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) or left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) wave. The polarizer contains 16 unit cells, which are arranged as a 4×4 array. Each of the unit cells has two layers and is printed on two sides of the substrate. The presented antenna radiates RHCP waves when the PIN diodes of top side are ON while it radiates LHCP waves when the PIN diodes of bottom side are ON. An analysis of the antenna is provided by using equivalent circuits. To verify the design concept, one prototype at 2.5 GHz band is designed and fabricated. Good agreement between the measurement and simulation results is obtained. The measured results show that the antenna achieves a gain better than 8.5 dBic in both RHCP and LHCP with 70% aperture efficiency. It is also shown that the presented design can be easily extended to the design of large-scale arrays without increasing the complexity of the DC bias circuit. The advantages of the proposed design are simple planar structure, low profile, flexibility in designs, high isolation between DC bias circuit and RF signals, high power handling, high gain and low cost. The proposed design can also be applied to the design of antennas at other frequency bands.

Abstract-In this paper, a technical concept and design of circular polarization detection patch array antenna using a double-balanced RF multiplier is proposed. The microwave integration technology is effectively employed to realize the proposed array antenna. The double-balanced RF multiplier is integrated with an orthogonal planar array antenna. The array antenna which consists of 12 patch elements and the RF multiplier is realized by embedding four zero bias Schottky barrier diodes on a slot-ring. The Both-sided MIC technology is successfully employed to realize the array antenna. The array antenna is realized in a very simple and compact structure as all the antenna elements, feeding circuit and the RF multiplier are integrated on both sides of a dielectric substrate. The ability of the proposed array antenna to detect the orthogonal circular polarization (LHCP and RHCP) is successfully confirmed by the experimental investigation.

While reconfigurable antennas have been implemented in various ways over the past 40 years, reconfigurable microstrip antennas, in particular, have existed for almost as long as the microstrip antenna itself, dating back to the early 1980s. The motivation for implementing reconfigurable properties in an antenna in general is straightforward -the acquisition of new capabilities that eliminate the need for multiple antennas and/or that provide additional degrees of operational freedom that expand system performance. Microstrip antennas are particularly good candidates for achieving reconfigurability, since their well-defined ground planes and planar structures present clear opportunities for integration of a number of popular reconfigurable mechanisms (including switches and tunable materials) and their associated control circuitry. Additionally, since most microstrip antennas operate in resonance and their operation is well modeled and well understood, an informed designer can manipulate the antenna structure and composition in different ways to achieve a variety of reconfigurable properties.This chapter addresses recent advances in the development of reconfigurable microstrip antennas, with an emphasis not only on the antennas themselves, but also on the practical issues surrounding their implementation, including control and system-level design and performance. Fundamentally, microstrip antenna behavior is governed by two kinds of properties: substrate properties and conductor properties. Section 6.2 describes the basic concepts behind changes in substrate parameters, including tunable changes in relative permittivity and permeability, as well as some recent examples that produce useful reconfigurability. Section 6.3 addresses changes in the conductive components of microstrip antennas that can lead to a wide variety of reconfigurability.
