A Reassessment of the Marrubium Vulgare L. Herb’s Potential Role in Diabetes Mellitus Type 2: First Results Guide the Investigation toward New Horizons

Abstract: Despite the wide variety of pharmacological activities described for the Marrubium vulgare L. herb, amazingly, only one clinical trial can be found in scientific literature. It was designed for the evaluation of its antidiabetic activity. Worse, the outcomes of this trial were contradictory to what previous in vivo mice assays had concluded. Therefore, should Marrubium vulgare be ruled out due to its lack of therapeutic potential in diabetes? The authors suggest a reevaluation of the clinical trial methodology… Show more

“…Marrubium vulgare has an ethnomedical record as an antidiabetic agent [85,86]. Certain efforts have been made in order to obtain scientific evidence supporting its traditional use in diabetes mellitus control [87]. Hellal et al [88] performed in vitro screening for the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of six Algerian traditional medicinal plant extracts where M. vulgare 80% ethanol extracts exerted a moderate effect (IC 50 = 12.66 µg/mL).…”

“…Once all that work has been completed, and based on the phytopharmaceutical and disease profiles, relevant relationships that can be suitable for clinical application may be identified [36]. Solid principles and promising preclinical results are a helpful starting point for clinical studies to determine the efficacy of a new plant medication [28]. Among them, the integrated metabolomics strategy can be used in pharmacokinetic study of herbal medicines to demonstrate their biological fates, thereby linking the plant metabolome to human metabolome is essential [37].…”

“…Also, studies were performed using M. vulgare extract, which demonstrated a gastro-protective activity (OLIVEIRA et al, 2011). In addition, its multifunctionality was confirmed through hypoglycemic (VILLANUEVA et al, 2017), vasorelaxant (EL-BARDAI et al, 2004, analgesic (MEYRE-SILVA et al, 2005), anti-inflammatory (EL ABBOUYI et al, 2013), antioxidant (WEEL et al, 1999 and antimicrobial (ZARAI et al, 2011) effect.…”
