A Real-Time Peer-to-Peer Streaming System for Mobile Networking Environment

Abstract: Peer-to-peer is emerging as a potentially disruptive technology for content distribution in the mobile Internet. In addition to the already well-known peer-to-peer file sharing, realtime peer-to-peer streaming is gaining popularity. This paper presents an effective real-time peer-to-peer streaming system for the mobile environment. The basis for the system is a scalable overlay network which groups peers into clusters according to their proximity using RTT values between peers as a criteria for the cluster sel… Show more

“…Peltotalo et al . designed a real‐time P2P streaming system for mobile network environments. The system groups the peers into clusters based on their round trip time (RTT) values, and uses the partial real time transport protocol (RTP) stream concept as media delivery.…”

“…Several research works have proposed different approaches for selecting the supplying partners in multimedia streaming systems. Although a great amount of work has been dedicated to video streaming or real‐time streaming , only few studies were concentrated on 3D streaming over mobile devices. Furthermore, most of the already developed approaches considered only sources that are within one hop of the requester, which leads in some cases to turning toward the server if the requested peers do not hold the required data.…”

“…A realtime p2p mobile streaming system is proposed in [8] by Peltotalo et al, demonstrating the feasibility of P2P live streaming in mobile networks. Xie et al [9] illustrate their open source project of p2p live media streaming for handheld devices, and demonstrate the low bandwidth and limited computation capacity in a handheld device.…”

“…Preliminary results of the mobile P2P system described in this paper have been published in [14]. In the following sections more information about the system is given by explaining in detail the extended Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) [15] messages used for signalling and providing more results from the experiments.…”
