A Real-Time Noise Monitoring System Based on Internet of Things for Enhanced Acoustic Comfort and Occupational Health

Abstract: Environmental noise directly affects well-being and productivity. On the one hand, high sound levels are related to a variety of health symptoms such as high blood pressure and stress. On the other hand, acoustic comfort increases concentration, facilitates communication and promotes productivity. The main objective of this research is to propose a modular and scalable solution for enhanced health and well-being using Internet of Things and mobile computing technologies and also, to present a real-time monitor… Show more

“…Noise, which includes sound produced by human activities, has been intensively studied for its detrimental effects on human comfort, health, and productivity. 31 Physical workload combined with noise intensity that exceeds 85 dB(A) for 8 hours of work could lead to fatigue symptomps such reduced concentration, physical exhaustion, dizziness and others. 32,33 Yovi et al 27 stated that noisy environmental conditions can cause the operator to feel tired and lose their concentration easily.…”

“…Environmental noise is a form of pollution that can have serious health consequences for populations repeatedly subjected to this exposure [4][5][6][7][8]. For example, in addition to causing hearing loss over time, it can also provoke high blood pressure and stress, which affects well-being and productivity [9,10].…”

“…In the specific case of office workers, previous research has highlighted several risks associated with the working behavior and environmental conditions for facility management that can affect the employees' mental health. While employees spend 90% of their time indoors, the environmental conditions in the workplace critically affect the employees' wellbeing and productivity [5]. Sun et al [6] explain that indoor air quality has a significant impact on the person's health, comfort, and performance.…”
