A Real-Time Burst Detection Method

Abstract: Real-time burst detection over multiple window size is useful for analyzing data streams. Various burst detection methods have been proposed. However, they are not effective for real-time detection. This work proposes a new burst detection method that reduces computation by avoiding redundant data updates. It analyses an event on its occurrence, and detects the period where arrival frequency rises rapidly to the previous period. In addition, it reduces computation by suppressing data within a certain period ev… Show more

“…In our system we adopt an approach based on a burst detection algorithm. A burst is defined as a large number of occurrences of a phenomenon within a short time window [15]. caused by the large number of messages shared on social media by the people who actually felt the shaking.…”

“…Works in [10], [32] and [16] discuss various burst detection algorithms. In EARS we chose to employ a simplified version of the hierarchical algorithm proposed in [10] since it is computationally light and can adapt well to both big and small bursts.…”

“…In EARS we chose to employ a simplified version of the hierarchical algorithm proposed in [10] since it is computationally light and can adapt well to both big and small bursts. An efficient algorithm is necessary because of The detection of a burst is based on the calculation of the frequency (C f req ) of messages in a short-term time window.…”

“…In telecommunication, a burst of access requests within a short period of time might indicate a DoS attack, which must be protected against immediately. Various methods have been proposed for burst analysis [1][2][3][4][5] and applied to the fields such as blog analysis, 6,7 clustering, 8,9 search 10 and personalization. 11 This work proposes a new burst analysis method that reduces computation by avoiding redundant data aggregation.…”
