“…In fact, for one participant the pool temperature of 26° Celsius (78.8° F) was sufficient reason to pull out of this study. The importance of water temperature in our study agrees with Bunning & Materson (1991) who reported that compliance to an aqua-based exercise program decreases among people with OA when the water temperature drops below 29° Celsius (84.2° F). It is likely that the warmer pool temperature during the HYD sessions contributed to participants scoring this session highest for relaxation.…”

“…Moderate increases found in mean JC (8%) and ASI (3%) from baseline to the pre-exercise test may reflect normal variability in disease symptoms, since no treatment changes occurred during this time. In contrast, the reductions in JC (39%) and ASI (41%) are similar in magnitude to the changes found in disease symptoms in adults with arthritis following some common medications (37).…”

“…Specifi c ways of fostering adherence among people with osteoarthritis include education programs such as the Arthritis Self-Management Program by Lorig, Mazonson, and Holman (1993;Weinberger, William, Boohere, & Katz, 1989). Others include the use of recreational exercise (Minor et al, 1989), and the use of a pool or any other exercise format that promotes socialization may similarly improve adherence to a recommended exercise regimen (Bunning & Materson, 1991). Another related and successful approach for people with knee osteoarthritis is the supplementation of a home-exercise program with a class-based exercise program as outlined by McCarthy et al (2004).…”
