A rat model for orthodontic translational expansive tooth movement

Abstract: With the model used in the P2 group, further research on translational expansive tooth movement and its effect on the periodontium can be pursued. In models for orthodontic expansion, it is strongly recommended to separately evaluate skeletal and dental effects.

“…The rat is a widely used animal in dental research (Karimbux et al 1995;Aghaloo et al 2011;Lin et al 2011;Park et al 2013). The jaw bones have been used to model many human orofacial clinical situations, such as periodontitis (Soboku et al 2014), orthodontic tooth movement (Danz et al 2013), periodontal regeneration (Yu et al 2013) and the relationship between systemic diseases (e.g., osteoporosis (Liu et al 2014) and diabetes (Soboku et al 2014)) with periodontal disease. However, there is inadequate published literature describing the use of the rat maxillary bone in dental implant research.…”

“…After sacrifice by cervical neck dislocation under isofluran anaesthesia, the maxillae were dissected free and processed with standard methods for non-decalcified histology. The method for processing and obtaining the sections, including virtual cutting plane definition based on micro-CT registrations, is presented in detail in Danz et al (2013).…”

“…An interesting question arises from this finding regarding the fate of the fibers that are no longer in between the tooth and the bone in the contact areas. Studies show that collagen fibers are most suitable to function in tension and might be elongated 50% or more from the initial stage . As no significant changes were observed in the collagenous networks before and after loading in the tension side, it is not clear whether tension of the collagen fibers transmits a significant tensional force to produce any deformation of the bone at these force levels.…”
