A Rare Presentation Of An Ectopic Breast Tissue In Axilla

Abstract: Accessory breast tissue is rare accounting to less than 1% cases seen in females. It is usually bilateral. We report a case of 24-year-old woman with a lump in the left axilla in view of its rarity and made a differential diagnosis of fibroadenoma, which following the investigations and histopathological report was confirmed as revealed fibroadenoma in the axilla. It should also be considered as a differential diagnosis for all axillary swellings.

“…Accessory breasts have the potential to undergo both benign and non-benign transformations as normal breast tissue. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Accessory breasts occur along the milk line extending from the axilla to the pubic region. [1][2][3][4][5][6] This line represents the location of the embryonic mammary ridges which involutes except for the two segments located in the pectoral regions which develop into breasts.…”

“…1 The incidence of accessory breast is 1-6% of the normal population. 1,3,4 Cases of accessory breasts are usually sporadic but familial presentations associated with urogenital and congenital cardiac abnormalities have been described although the association has been challenged. 4 Kajava developed the accessory breast classification system in 1915 which is still being used today 3 (Table 1).…”

“…Patients with axillary FAs usually seek medical attention after a history of a palpable lump that ranges from a few days to several years. In some cases, they report symptoms of pain, tenderness, and discomfort [23][24][25]47]. On physical examination, fibroadenomas are firm in consistency, well-defined, tender or non-tender, and freely mobile.…”

“…Ectopic breast tissue, which was confirmed in this case, is commonly caused by incomplete regression of the embryonic mammary ridge (milk line) located from the axilla to the groin. Ectopic breast tissue can be distinguished relatively easily if it is present bilaterally or if the areola and nipple are expressed; however, such tissue can often be confused with other diseases [3]. In particular, axillary ectopic breast tis-sue with a diameter of more than 5 cm is rare, and if it occurs in men, misdiagnosis of other diseases, such as lipoma or liposarcoma, is likely to occur [4].…”
