A rare cause of non discal sciatica: Schwannoma of the sciatic nerve

Abstract: Schwannomas are peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Schwannomas arising in the sciatic nerve are considered a rare condition. Their symptomatology usually mimics sciatic pain due to a herniated disc, which can delay the diagnosis. We report the case of a patient with chronic sciatica in whom Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examination of the right thigh revealed a tumor of the sciatic nerve. Excision of the tumor was easily performed without neural lesioning. Histopathological examination revealed the tumor to be… Show more

“…The most common clinical presentation of sciatic nerve schwannoma consists of a painful palpable mass. 9,11,13 Schwannomas most commonly occur in adults between 20 and 50 years of age. Schwannomas are usually homogeneous on both T1-and T2-weighted images but a neurofibroma is usually heterogeneous.…”

“…It is a heterogenous group of tumour arising from the Schwann cells or the perineural cells (Omezzine et al, 2009). It accounts for 3%~10% of all soft tissue sarcoma (Katz et al, 2009).…”

“…It accounts for 3%~10% of all soft tissue sarcoma (Katz et al, 2009). Almost half of the MPNST are associated with Type 1 Neurofibromatosis or von-recklinghausen's disease, an autosomal dominant disease which is associated with inactivation of NF1 gene (Omezzine et al, 2009;Katz et al, 2009;Dimou et al, 2009). It can also be associated with post-radiation.…”

“…Operasyon sırasında tümör kapsülü üzerinden uzunlamasına insizyon yapılarak tümör kitlesi sinir fibrilleri arasından basit enükleasyon ve dikkatli diseksiyon ile eksize edilir (7)(8)(9). Bu karakteristik olarak Schwannomu nörofibromdan ayırır, nörofibromda sinir fibrilleri tümör ile karışmıştır.…”
