A rare case of spontaneous superficial femoral artery pseudoaneurysm in a young patient: case report and review of literature

Abstract: Spontaneous femoral artery pseudoaneurysm (PSA) is a rare disease and there are few reported cases. We report a case of a 17-year-old male with increasing left leg pain associated with swelling at the site of the pain. We observed a voluminous pulsatile mass. He had no history of trauma or surgery. Imaging confirmed a large PSA of the proximal portion of the left superficial femoral artery (SFA). The PSA was treated by resection of the aneurysm, reconstruction with inter-positional saphenous vein graft. Three … Show more

“…Causes of pseudoaneurysm include infection, trauma, iatrogenic causes, Behcet's disease, Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (Type IV), and other connective tissue disorders. 1 Spontaneous onset of superficial femoral artery pseudoaneurysm is rare 2 and thought to be caused by atherosclerosis. 3 In this case, there was no evidence of atherosclerosis in the superficial femoral artery, which was in good condition.…”

“…There are only a very limited number of cases published in the literature with spontaneous SFA artery pseudoaneurysms and rupture is yet more rare [ 6 ]. There are case reports though of femoral artery pseudoaneurysm – but with the exception of the limited cases mentioned above – they clearly document a traumatic blunt trauma [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Pseudoaneurysms are most commonly a result of trauma but can also be iatrogenic during catheterization of vessels, vessel instrumentation, at anastomotic sites or due to failure of percutaneous closure devices 1 . Spontaneous superficial femoral artery (SFA) pseudoaneurysms are rare, but have been reported to be associated with infection, vasculitides, and connective tissue disorders 2 …”
