A rare case of peritonitis due toBrevundimonas vesicularis

Abstract: Healthcare associated infections due to gram negative bacilli are a major concern among healthcare institutions. While Pseudomonas and Escherichia coli species are known major organisms; other lesser known species can also cause primary infection. We present a case of peritonitis in a patient on a peritoneal dialysis regimen due to Brevundimonas vesicularis.

“…In several countries, Brevundimonas spp. have been reported as the cause of at least 49 cases of infections, including bacteraemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, peritonitis and urinary tract infection (Shang et al 2012; Bolzon and Nguyen 2018; Ryan and Pembroke 2018). Similarly, C. metallidurans , C. pauculus and R. radiobacter (Agrobacterium radiobacter) have already been described in different and even fatal nosocomial infections (Sood et al 2010; Langevin et al 2011; Duggal et al 2013; Badrising et al 2014; Uzodi et al 2014; D’Inzeo et al 2015; Almasy et al 2016; Pillonetto et al 2018; Casanova et al 2019; Shenai et al 2019).…”

“…The clinical course of our patient identifies several unique characteristics of this infection in chronic peritoneal dialysis patients. Four out of the 5 reported patients had to have peritoneal dialysis catheter removal in order to eradicate the infection [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Also, 4 out of the 5 reported patients had eventual recovery, but 1 patient developed encapsulating sclerosing peritonitis (Table 1 ).…”
