A Rare Case of a Synchronous Anaplastic Carcinoma Thyroid with Ductal Carcinoma Breast

Abstract: Dual malignancy was first reported by Billroth in 1889. Incidence of second malignancy in cancer patients is as high as 10%, but synchronous anaplastic thyroid cancer along with breast tumor is a rare entity. We present a case of a 61-year-old female with a synchronous anaplastic carcinoma thyroid with ductal carcinoma breast. The plausible association of breast cancers with thyroid carcinomas should thus be evaluated in larger cohort studies. More importantly, this report is to highlight the unusual synchrono… Show more

“…If papillary thyroid carcinoma and breast ductal carcinoma are detected synchronously, the breast ductal carcinoma should be resected upon the exclusion of medullary or anaplastic thyroid carcinoma because breast ductal carcinoma is more likely to present with distant metastasis and to have a poorer prognosis. “…Dual malignancy, first reported by Billroth [1], is rarely associated to paraneoplastic syndromes (Table 1) [2][3][4][5]. The second malignancy can be synchronous or metachronous if detected within more than 6 months of the diagnosis of the first histologically different malignant tumor [1].…”

Although dancing eye syndrome or opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia (OMA) is a classical central nervous system paraneoplastic syndrome [6], it has never been reported in patient with concurrent cancers.…”
