A rare anomaly of the extensor digitorum longus

Abstract: We encountered the absence of the tendon to the fourth toe of the extensor digitorum longus muscle of the right leg in the body of a 73-year-old Japanese woman during the course of educational dissection at Nagoya City University Medical School. The tendon to the fourth toe of the extensor digitorum longus muscle was solely absent. To our knowledge, this anatomical variation has never been cited in the medical literature. We document the precise gross anatomical findings with some morphometric measurements. Mo… Show more

“…An additional muscle and a tendon for the 2 nd toe has been reported by Tezer and Cicekcibasi [9]. Absence of the of the extensor digitorum longus muscle tendon to the fourth toe in the right leg has been reported in a Japanese cadaver [10]. However, a case of absence of EDL tendon slip to the fifth toe and PT sending tendinous slip to the fifth toe is being reported for the first time.…”

“…Typically, the EDL reaches the phalanges from the second to the fifth toe. However, it is possible that one of the tendons may be absent (Sakuma et al 2004), in which case, the role of the toe extensor can be performed singularly by the extensor digitorum brevis. If the absence refers only to the fifth digit, the missing tendon can be replaced by the accessory muscle, the peroneus quinti digiti, which arises with the fibularis tertius from the common muscle belly (Tubbs et al 2016).…”

“…Tendinous anomalies of the anterior crural compartment muscles are becoming increasingly well known through studies of anatomical variation (Lundeen et al ., 1983; Sakuma et al ., 2004; Ikiz & Üçerler, 2005). Specifically, supernumerary tendinous slips inserting onto the hallucal proximal phalanx or metatarsophalangeal (MP) joint capsule have been demonstrated to occur in the majority (approx.…”
