A rapid CAE-based design method for modular hybrid truss structures

Abstract: The development of hybrid trusses made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic struts and aluminum knots is currently not standardized, and there is no overall method for the design, although it has been proven that mass reduction is feasible. This paper introduces a new method for computer-aided engineering based design of hybrid trusses using carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic struts and metal nodes based on a modular system. The method includes all design steps from topology optimization to computer-aided design mo… Show more

“…Considering the limitations discussed above, we have developed a new heuristic two-level optimization process specifically for stiffened panel layout optimization. There have been other works on two-level optimization using topology optimization, but none on stiffened panel layout or using complexity (Chirehdast & Papalambros 1992; Walbrun, Witzgall, & Wartzack 2019).…”

“…This fact allows structures made with clamped joints to be completely reusable (reusing profiles and clamps). The construction of removable and reconfigurable structures is a growing trend in other areas such as modular aluminum systems [ 6 , 7 ] or scaffolding structures [ 8 , 9 ], where they are already being used. However, further development, research and tests are still necessary for commercial solutions to standard steel profiles, such as clamped joints.…”
