A Randomized, Waiting List-Controlled 12-Week Trial of Atomoxetine in Adults with ADHD

Abstract: Our results suggest that Atx is an effective treatment in adult ADHD. It reduces ADHD core and associated emotional symptoms and increases self-esteem and quality of life. AEs were consistent with those reported in other studies in adult ADHD.

“…However, when data from study LYDZ were pooled together with placebocontrolled data from another study (study LYEE [3]) in this integrated analysis, improvements in emotional control on the BRIEF-AS were statistically significant. This is consistent with improvements in emotional symptoms in other studies of ATX that used the WRAADDS, BADDS or CAARS:L [16,36,42,47]. However, in this integrated analysis, improvements in emotional control on the BRIEF-AS were relatively small (effect size of 0.19), compared with the larger effect sizes in favor of ATX treatment of emotional symptoms that were detected using the WRAADDS (effect size 0.66) by Reimherr et al [36] and using the CAARS:L (effect sizes 1.0-2.0) by Sobanski et al [47].…”

“…Following treatment, improvements in emotional control correlated moderately with improvements in ADHD symptoms and QoL, both in the overall population and in the placebocontrolled subset population. Overall, these findings are in line with previous studies of treatments for adult ADHD, including ATX and methylphenidate, which used the WRAADDS, BADDS or CAARS:L 1 to measure emotional symptoms [16,32,36,38,40,42,47].…”

“…Two separate sensitivity analyses were conducted to examine the robustness of the model predictions by (1) using only adult studies, and (2) adding studies that utilized placebos other than a standard pill placebo (additional patch placebo [18], exclusion of lead-in placebo responders [26], and a wait-list placebo [31]). All other aspects of the analysis were held constant.…”
