A Randomized Trial Study of a Preschool Literacy Curriculum: The Importance of Implementation

Abstract: In this 1-year experimental study of 254 students across 27 high-poverty preschool classrooms in an urban setting in the northeast, use of a technology-based prekindergarten literacy curriculum in addition to the district curriculum was compared with the use of the district curriculum alone. Results indicated no main effects for the experimental curriculum. Following the initial analyses, fidelity of implementation in the experimental classrooms was examined and results indicated that children in classrooms ra… Show more

“…In addition to training and support, implementation fidelity can also have an impact on the success of an intervention. Research shows that high fidelity of implementation can significantly increase the potential effectiveness of literacy programs (Davidson, Fields, & Yang, 2009). Also important to note is that training and support, and implementation fidelity are closely linked and that the more training and support that is offered the higher implementation fidelity is likely to be.…”

“…The primary limitation to preschools' effectiveness is an inability to effectively integrate new curriculum materials with the skills of current teachers (Davidson et al, 2009). Therefore, scholars have emphasized the use of professional support systems to facilitate the integration of effective materials and teaching skills (Klute, 2012;Penuel et al, 2012).…”

“…In contexts where study participants are nested (e.g., students within classrooms or groups), multilevel modeling approaches assess the extent to which fidelity (as one source of between-teacher variation) explains variation in student outcomes (e.g., Odom et al, 2010; Zvoch, 2012). Within the context of experimental designs, replacing the causal variable, or “intent to treat” (a dichotomous variable representing the treatment or control group as randomized), with a fidelity index score computed for each group estimates the effects of “treatment on the treated,” as recommended by Cook (2005; e.g., Davidson, Fields, & Yang, 2009; Justice, Mashburn, Pence, & Wiggins, 2008; T. Smith et al, 2013).…”
