A randomized trial of short psychotherapy versus sustained‐release bupropion for smoking cessation

Abstract: The 1.5-day psychotherapy exceeded bupropion's efficacy, presenting an alternative to pharmacological smoking cessation aids, especially for smokers who reject drugs to treat their substance dependence, at a similar cost (Euro 350) as the bupropion treatment (Euro 355).

“…To effectively cope with PADed superiors, various techniques from a host of psychotherapeutic approaches (see, e.g., [44,45,46]) may be introduced to and trained with a PAD victim. It is to be expected that a PADed superior will not seek help during most of her/his disease progression (see above and below).…”

“…With respect to the alleged uniqueness of our 3-month results, we re-emphasize that continuous abstinence was defined strictly according to the Russell Standard as detailed by West and colleagues [3] and that in that very same paper, 'point prevalence' is repeatedly defined as 'at the time of the follow-up', i.e., without giving any specified observation period [3]. In our trial, subjects were first contacted by telephone and asked about their smoking status.…”

“…The article by Zernig et al [3] reports that a 1.5-day session of Psychodynamic Model Training (PDM) appears to have achieved validated continuous success rates of a magnitude without parallel in the world literature, and that the psychotherapy treatment was more than three times more effective than bupropion, a smoking cessation medication with strong evidence of efficacy [4].…”

“…From the psychotherapeutic perspective, this overreporting of abstinence is very plausible because failure to remain abstinent, i.e. failure to reach the explicit goal of the therapeutic intervention, is often perceived as shameful by the participant, constituting a threat to his/ her self-worth [12,17,18] .…”
