This study showed a statistically significant increase in skin hydration as well as a rapid cooling effect lasting approximately 30 min, after application of Voltaren vehicle gel. The small relative increase in water loss may be attributed to an additional skin surface water loss secondary to the increased water content brought into the skin by the Voltaren vehicle gel. The use did not induce any skin irritation and was found acceptable to use by the majority of participants.

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder with considerable impact on quality of life. Emollients or moisturizers are widely recommended, but are these effective and safe? We searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the Cochrane Skin Group Specialised Skin Register, CENTRAL in The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, the GREAT database and five trial registers to December 2015. We included 77 RCTs with 6603 participants. Seven studies (9%) were at low risk of bias, 34 (44%) had unclear risk and 36 (47%) were at high risk. The quality of the evidence was mainly low or moderate for the prespecified outcomes. The most important comparison, 'moisturizer vs. no moisturizer', showed improved Scoring Atopic Dermatitis values in the moisturizer group compared with no moisturizer [mean difference -2·42, 95% confidence interval (CI) -4·55 to -0·28], but did not meet the minimal important difference of 8·7. Fewer flares were seen (risk ratio 0·40, 95% CI 0·23-0·70) and the rate of flares was reduced (hazard ratio 3·74, 95% CI 1·86-7·50). The groups applying moisturizer used less topical corticosteroids over 6-8 weeks (mean difference -9·30 g, 95% CI 15·3 to -3·27). Glycyrrhetinic acid-, urea- and glycerol-containing creams worked better than their controls (vehicle, placebo or no moisturizer) according to both participants and physicians. More flares were reported with moisturizer alone than when combined with twice-weekly fluticasone propionate (risk ratio 2·17, 95% CI 1·55-3·11). Adding moisturizers to topical anti-inflammatory treatment was more effective than anti-inflammatory treatment alone and resulted in fewer flares.

A real-world, non-interventional Indian study on clinical assessment of intense moisturizing formulation in dry skin disorders

Introduction: Moisturizers account for the largest and important skin care product categories and are the backbone in the management of dry skin conditions associated with atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis and ichthyosis. Methods: A multicentre, retrospective data analysis was done at 145 dermatology clinics across India in patients who were prescribed MaxRich®. Patients with history of xerosis with an identifiable causes like atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and ichthyosis were included in study. Effectiveness data in terms of improvement in Dry Skin Area and Severity Index (DASI) Score compared to baseline and physician global assessment at the end of treatment for improvement in xerosis were captured.Results: There was significant reduction in mean DASI score as compared to baseline at week 2 & 4 (p<0.01). As compared to baseline, a significant decrease in DASI score was observed by 47.7% and 82.4% at the end of week 2 and 4 respectively. As per physician global assessment, 458 patients (83.4%) noticed very good improvement in xerosis at the end of 4 weeks whereas 82 patients (14.9%) recorded moderate improvement. Similar results were also obtained for patient global assessment where 478 patients (87%) recorded very good improvement; 67 patients (12.2%) and 6 patients (1.1%) recorded moderate and mild improvement respectively. There were no adverse events reported with MaxRich®.Conclusion: MaxRich®, an intense moisturizer was effective in improvement of DASI score associated with atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and ichthyosis and can be considered as an adjunct therapy in the management of these skin disorders for better results.
