A Randomized Pilot Study of Stochastic Vibration Therapy in Spinocerebellar Ataxia

Abstract: Whole body vibration (WBV) is a biomechanical treatment used widely in professional sports and rehabilitation. We examined the effect of stochastic WBV on ataxia in spinocerebellar ataxia types 1, 2, 3, and 6 (SCA 1, 2, 3 and 6) in a single-center double-blind sham-controlled study. Stochastic WBV was applied on four sequent days, each treatment consisting of five stimulus trains of 60-s duration at a frequency of 6.5 Hz and 60-s resting time between stimuli (n = 17). Patients allocated to the sham group recei… Show more

“…Historically, in line with the classical view of the CB as a motor center, the main focus of rehabilitation approaches has been on motor aspects, mainly ataxia and dysmetria [135,136], although there is limited evidence about their effectiveness [137][138][139][140].…”

“…Therapeutic approaches vary, 4 but they typically fail to sufficiently alleviate symptoms. [5][6][7][8][9] Most degenerative ataxias feature Purkinje cell loss, 10,11 resulting in modified inputs to the deep cerebellar nuclei; thus, neuromodulation targeting these deep cerebellar nuclei may succeed in numerous DCAs.…”

“…Positive effects were later observed in Parkinson's disease (PD) (5). We recently confirmed an improvement in core motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia and postural stability in PD (6), and provided evidence of improved gait and speech in spinocerebellar ataxias (SCA; 1, 2, 3, 6) after treatment with stochastic resonance therapy (7).…”
