A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness and safety of a novel green-lipped mussel extract -BioLex® -for managing pain in moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the hip and knee

Abstract: BackgroundExtracts from perna canaliculus, the Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) are widely used as a complimentary therapy by patients with osteoarthritis (OA). The current study investigated the potential of a novel GLM formulation as a treatment for OA. A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial was undertaken to assess potential impacts on pain and quality of life following 12 weeks of treatment.MethodsEighty patients with moderate to severe OA of the hip or knee were randomized to receive either 600 mg of… Show more

“…Inconsistent findings were observed in GLM extracts (Lau et al, 2004;Stebbings et al, 2017), vitamin E (Brand et al, 2001;Tantavisut et al, 2017), MSM (Kim et al, 2006;Debbi et al, 2011), rose hip (Warholm et al, 2003;Ginnerup-Nielsen et al, 2015), LFO (Kinoshita et al, 2017), ginger (Alipour et al, 2016Altman and Marcussen, 2001;Niempoog et al, 2012;Zakeri et al, 2011) and willow bark extract (Schmid et al, 2001).…”

“…The majority of the studies recruited participants with knee OA (n = 33). Meanwhile, six studies involved participants with either knee or hip OA (Schmid et al, 2001;Warholm et al, 2003;Jacquet et al, 2009;Ginnerup-Nielsen et al, 2015;Hunt et al, 2016;Stebbings et al, 2017), whereas three studies did not state the affected OA region (Belcaro et al, 2008a;Belcaro et al, 2010). The follow-up duration for the included studies ranged from 3 to 32 weeks.…”

“…Reports from a couple of clinical trials have advocated effectiveness of P. canaliculus extract in knee osteoarthritis and gastrointestinal dysfunction producing nonsignificant alterations in the gut microbiota (Coulson et al., ; Coulson et al., ). Similarly, the pain‐relieving efficacy of a commercial extract from this mollusk (BioLex) in osteoarthritis has been investigated in a clinical trial, which advocated its effectiveness as a long‐term treatment based on observations in the postintervention period (Stebbings et al., ).…”

“…Marine organisms are a major source of food, which are gaining a lot of interest from the scientific community for their nutritional value, and potential role in the functional food and nutraceuticals industry. The health‐promoting effects of many products isolated from marine organisms have been established after successful clinical trials (Coulson, Butt, Vecchio, Gramotnev, & Vitetta, ; Coulson, Vecchio, Gramotnev, & Vitetta, ; Kean et al., ; Stebbings, Gray, Schneiders, & Sansom, ).…”
