A Randomized Control Trial to Evaluate Pressure-Reducing Seat Cushions for Elderly Wheelchair Users

Abstract: A definitive randomized control multicenter cushion trial is feasible with a sample size of 50 to 100 per study group. In the definitive trial, the definition of sitting-acquired pressure ulcers should be limited to lesions occurring over the ischial tuberosities.

“…Those with scores ranging from 19 to 23 are not considered at risk for developing PrUs. 3,25 Interface Pressure: Interface pressure measurements were recorded throughout the surgery using an FSA pressure mapping system (Vista Medical). The FSA pressure mapping system uses paper-thin, flexible force sensors to measure and display interface pressures between 2 surfaces, such as the body and a support surface.…”

“…Since then there have been an increasing number of publications on the prevention and management of pressure ulcers in people who sit for extended periods of time. However, most of these publications did not have any end user collaboration in their development [3,10,11]. In 2016 The TVS commissioned an update of the clinical practice guidelines for seating and pressure ulcers to include the most up to date evidence and practice.…”
