A randomized control trial of an asthma self-management program for adolescents in Taiwan: A study protocol

Abstract: Uncontrolled asthma in adolescents can be explained by developmental changes and lack of priority for self-care activities. Limited reports on asthma self-management programs for adolescents to enhance prevention behaviors in Taiwan were found. The protocol paper presents a two-armed, randomized controlled trial aiming to test the effectiveness of a newly developed self-management program for 112 adolescents with asthma in Taiwan. The primary outcome is asthma self-efficacy. Data will be collected at baseline … Show more

“…The original instruments for asthma self-efficacy, outcome-expectancy, and asthma selfmanagement behaviours (prevention and management) were only available in English. With permissions obtained, translating these English versions into Chinese by translation and backtranslation process [23]. The Cronbach's alphas to support the reliabilities of the Chinese versions of the Asthma Self-efficacy index and Outcome-expectancy were 0.83 and 0.88, respectively.…”

“…A smaller sample of 90 participants with an attrition rate of 7.8% to reach the medium effect size than initially estimated in our protocol paper [ 21 ] were recruited. The sample size calculation was based on the main outcome of self-efficacy scores between groups at a 0.05 significance level of a power .8 and a 0.58 effect size [ 22 ].…”
