A Randomized Comparison of Misoprostol 6 to 8 Hours Versus 24 Hours After Mifepristone for Abortion

Abstract: Mifepristone 200 mg followed 6 to 8 hours later by misoprostol 800 microg vaginally is as effective for abortion and has significantly fewer side effects as compared with regimens using a 24-hour dosing interval. Women receiving mifepristone and vaginal misoprostol for abortion can have the flexibility to administer the misoprostol as soon as 6 hours after using the mifepristone.

“…With a regimen of mifepristone and vaginal misoprostol, approximately 3% to 5% of women will subsequently undergo uterine evacuation [1][2][3]. Regimens using mifepristone and buccal misoprostol have a similar (3.3%) risk of requiring uterine evacuation [4,5].…”

“…This counterintuitive finding suggests that the information that women receive about medication abortion may be primarily negative or disconcerting in some way. Given the high levels of satisfaction reported by medication abortion users in past studies [12,18,19], this result raises questions about the information being provided in medical facilities, on health Web sites and in the media. It would be useful to further investigate the roots of this adverse reaction to gain a better understanding of how their knowledge of medication abortion led these women to prefer aspiration.…”

“…4 In general population the failure rate of mifepristone misoprostol is 0 to 9%. [6][7][8][9] We were not able to induce medical abortion in both cases of uncontrolled hyperthyroidism. More ever as soon as the hyperthyroidism is under control both of these cases were successful in having medical abortion with Mifepristone and misoprostol.…”

“…5 Clinical trials in United States, Canada and Turkey report complete abortion rate from 91%-100%. [6][7][8][9] Hyperthyroidism in pregnancy is associated with low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, still birth, thyroid storm and maternal congestive heart failure. During early pregnancy symptoms of hyperthyroidism may worsen as HCG also has TSH like action.…”
