A randomised controlled trial on evaluation of the clinical efficacy of massage therapy in a multisensory environment for residents with severe and profound intellectual disabilities: a pilot study

Abstract: Participants of MT in multisensory environment acquired more inactive state than the other study groups. This inactive state indicates a state of 'passive alertness', which is more likely in a relaxing manner.

“…After submission, a nutritional expert assessed the photos in terms of food diversity, vegetable consumption and intervention compliance. Chan & Chien (2017) noted that, due to the poor cognitive and communication skills of their participants, the use of self-reported data would be 'inappropriate' and so they relied upon staff-reported observational measures.…”

These drugs may cause side effects such as sedation, mouth dryness, motor weakness and visual disturbance.…”

“…One of these trials was a cluster randomised trial of the effectiveness of nidotherapy (an intervention aiming to address environmental factors that may be related to aggressive challenging behaviour) (Tyrer et al 2017), while the other examined the clinical efficacy of a combination of multisensory environment and massage therapy for challenging behaviour in adults with severe intellectual disability (Chan & Chien 2017). Both these trials showed some evidence of potential efficacy for these interventions.…”

“…The second trial was a pilot randomised controlled trial with four arms and thus not powered to demonstrate efficacy (Chan & Chien 2017). Indeed, there was no effect for any of the interventions (multisensory environment, massage therapy or its combination) on the primary outcome measures of challenging behaviour in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities after 10 weeks of intervention, but the authors reported that ratings on a secondary measure of 'alertness' showed that individuals in two of the treatment arms (multisensory environment or combination intervention) experienced a significant change from active to inactive states during the interventions.…”
