A Raman calibration for the quantification of SO42groups dissolved in silicate glasses: Application to natural melt inclusions

Abstract: We tested our calibration on several silicate glasses equilibrated under moderately reducing conditions (QFM+0.8 ≤ fO2 ≤ QFM+1.4) in which S is dissolved as both SO4 2and S 2-. We also analysed several olivine-hosted melt inclusions collected from Etna and for which the fO2 and S speciation is unknown. For these samples, the S content estimated by the Raman calibration is systematically lower than the total S measured by EPMA. We combined both methods to estimate the S 2content not accounted for by Raman and d… Show more

“…Raman spectra in Figure 2d were measured to further characterize the existence of SO 4 2− groups. [ 25 ] Raman peaks located at 242, 308, and 353 cm −1 can be ascribed to the F 2g , F 1u , A 1g modes of ZIS, respectively. [ 26,27 ] After annealing in air, the ZIS‐O sample exhibits an additional peak located at 990 cm −1 compared with ZIS, which can be ascribed to the SO stretch of SO 4 2− .…”

“…Spectroscopic studies were achieved to establish calibrations from Raman spectra in crystallized materials (e.g., these works). Many studies on amorphous materials based on the investigation of CO 2 and S behaviors in a silicate melt have led to subsequent calibrations (e.g., these works). Calibrations to quantify the H 2 O in melts by Raman spectroscopy have been proposed by these works .…”

“…The protocol to simulate Raman peaks is described fully in previous investigations and is used routinely for the quantification of volatiles species in silicate glasses (Mysen and Virgo 1980 a , b ; Mercier et al , 2009; Morizet et al , 2013 a , 2017). First, we have fixed the peak position and widths (Gaussian and Lorentzian), leaving only the peak area optimised.…”

“…Relevant interpretations of Raman spectra in this study will require the acquisition of laboratory data under similar analytical conditions of the on-board Raman spectrometer. Although Raman spectroscopy is nominally non-quantitative with relevant calibration, it can be used for quantifying S at low concentrations (thousands of ppm) owing to the high Raman activity of S-bearing molecular groups (Morizet et al , 2017).…”
