A radiation-like era before inflation

Abstract: We show that the semiclassical approximation to the Wheeler–DeWitt equation for the minisuperspace of a minimally coupled scalar field in the spatially flat de Sitter universe prompts the existence of an initial power-law evolution driven by non-adiabatic terms from the gravitational wavefunction which act like radiation. This simple model hence describes the onset of inflation from a previous radiation-like expansion during which the cosmological constant is already present but subleading.

“…In the present paper, we will show that fluctuation-dissipation dynamics during a radiation-dominated pre-inflationary epoch can indeed lead to such a thermalized state, where the homogeneous inflaton value naturally becomes localized within a flat plateau about the origin, thus setting the necessary conditions for the onset of inflation (see e.g. [56][57][58] for previous discussions of the role of the pre-inflationary dynamics in setting initial conditions for inflation).…”

“…We use this to make an argument that it is extremely likely that if the Universe had a period before inflation in which the semiclassical approximation was valid, then it expanded in approximately the same way as a radiation-dominated universe during that period. Evidence for a radiation dominated pre-inflationary era has also been found in a model in which the Wheeler-DeWitt equation is solved in the minisuperspace approximation which includes the Hamiltonian for the scale factor when a cosmological constant is present along with the Hamiltonian for a single mode of a massless minimally coupled scalar field [3].…”
