“…Existing literature has proved that illness and psychological health problems in seafarers are more serious than in average workers. [11][12][13][14][15][16]18,[51][52][53][54][55][56][57] In addition to harsh working and living conditions, the current study suggests that sexual abstinence may contribute to the overall degradation of seafarers' mental health. Isolated for long periods, current seafarers have limited possibilities to take leave from their ships, which dictates their rhythms.…”

“…Additionally, this study can provide various arguments for understanding the causes of mental problems experienced by seafarers. Despite conducting mental and physical examinations on seamen on a regular basis, Kınalı et al found that 33.2% of the seafarers they studied were experiencing mental problems ( 90 ).…”

“…The abandonment of seafarers internationally also arose during the pandemic, and many mariners experienced long periods of time on vessels without access to shore leave or the ability to return home, which could increase the social isolation many mariners already experience [ 10 , 11 ]. Even during non-pandemic times, mariners face a host of occupational safety and health hazards on the vessel, adverse weather, lack of access to family and loved ones, isolation on board, musculoskeletal disorders, and conflicts resulting from living and working in close quarters with other mariners [ 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ]. However, there are various maritime jobs; while some mariners may spend weeks or months at sea on oceangoing vessels, others may work on day boats, such as operating a ferry or harbor tug, and others may work on a government research or response vessel, all which could result in differential occupational health hazards.…”
