A Quantitative Study of Intervertebral Disc Morphologic Changes Following Plasma-Mediated Percutaneous Discectomy

Abstract: Based on MRI examinations, subtle anatomic changes may occur following plasma-mediated percutaneous discectomy. Further study is required to determine the clinical relevance of these changes.

“…Pfirrmann classification was used to evaluate the severity of IVD degeneration based on T2-weighted images [31]. Intervertebral disc height (IDH) and disc protrusion size (DPS) were measured according to the method reported by Smuck et al [32]. IDH loss rates and DPS reduction rates were calculated according to ½ðlatest-preoperativeÞ/preoperative.…”

“…BMI was classified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification systems as: underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m 2 ), normal weight (BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m 2 ), overweight (BMI 25-29.9 kg/m 2 ), and obese (BMI > 30 kg/m 2 ). Disc height at the site of OCN was divided into two categories: residual disc height of the herniated disc ≥ 50% (type A) and residual disc height < 50% (type B) [19,20].…”

“…Nakashima et al (33) used MRI to measure cervical disc degeneration and protrusion in 1211 relatively healthy volunteers. Smuck et al (34) measured the intervertebral disc height of the lumbar on the MRI sagittal plane and the anteroposterior size of the disc protrusion on the MRI axial plane. In our study, the size of the disc protrusion removed during the operation was similar to the size of the disc protrusion measured on MRI.…”
