A quantitative assessment of the release of farm-reared red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) for shooting in central Spain

Abstract: The release of farm-reared game is considered a conflictive management tool because of its potential harmful ecological effects on wildlife and associated habitats. Estimates of the number of animals released and the area where this game management takes place could give an idea of the magnitude of their potential impacts. We aimed to quantitatively assess the release of farm-reared red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa) in the province of Ciudad Real, central Spain, one of the main hunting areas in this count… Show more

“…Millions of game birds are reared and released for shooting across Europe (Caro, Delibes-Mateos, Vicente, & Arroyo, 2014;PACEC, 2014). Concerns have been expressed that this activity may affect non-target species through herbivory by high densities of birds, the spread of diseases and parasites, increased competition for resources, indirect effects via generalist predators, and through potentially lowering investment in habitat management or protection (Draycott, Parish, Woodburn, & Carroll, 2000;Diaz-Fernandez, Vinuela, & Arroyo, 2012;Diaz-Sanchez et al, 2012;Lees et al, 2013;Villanua, Casas, Vinuela, Gortazar, & Morales, 2007).…”

“…Hunting in Spain has experienced significant changes in recent years in relation to laws, game management, the number of hunters and the dynamics of game species populations (Blanco-Aguiar et al 2004;Martínez-Abraín et al 2013;Caro et al 2014).…”
