A quantitative analysis of the spinal motor pool and its target muscle during growth in the dogfish, Scyliorhinus canicula

Abstract: In order to relate the phenomenon of continuous growth in fishes to the development of the neuromuscular system, we established the numbers and sizes of spinal motoneurons and red and white axial muscle fibers in late- and post-embryonic dogfish within the size range 6-71 cm. We found that motoneuron somata, ventral root axons, and red and white muscle fibers increase their size throughout the life of the animal; there is an initial increase in the number of motoneurons that ceases as the fish reaches a length… Show more

“…The relationship between motoneurons and axial musculature has been well studied in lampreys [Tcravainen and Rovai nen. 1971b], elasmobranchs [Mos and Williamson, 1986] and some bony Fishes [van Raamsdonk el a!.. 1983;Fctcho.…”

“…In general, increases in stri ated muscle mass (fiber number and/or diameter) be yond a certain body size are accompanied mainly by an increase in the diameter of myelinated axons ra ther than an increase in their number [Easter, 1979;van Raamsdonk el al., 1983;Mos and Williamson, 1986]. One exception was stingrays, for which increas ing myotomal muscle mass was correlated with in creasing motoneuron number throughout an animal's lifetime [Leonard etal., 1978],…”
