A qualitative study on the initiation into injection drug use: Necessary and background processes

Abstract: Previous literature has identified several factors associated with the initiation of injection drug use; we add to this literature by focussing on the biological, psychosocial, socio-cultural and socio-structural processes that play a role in injection initiation. We identified three necessary processes. Firstly, one must already have developed a conception of drugs as creating desired effects. Secondly, initiation is born out of a social context through interaction with injection drug users. Lastly, the medic… Show more

“…Some studies referenced the idea of ‘exposure’ to drug injecting behaviors within particular social networks and locations (e.g., street drug scenes) (44, 61, 70, 72). More precise conceptualizations identified witnessing or observing others injecting (38, 47, 50, 52, 55, 70), which can generate awareness and curiosity (44, 52): “He would sit in the back [of the car] and start shooting himself. And I was watching him as he was nodding out, much more than I was, and I started getting jealous” (Woman, 21 years old, USA (48)).…”

“…Further, the efficiency afforded by injection vs. non-injection of drugs has been identified as a key motivator for transitions into initiation, particularly among individuals experiencing endemic poverty and during periods when the price of illegal drugs increases [26][27][28][29][30][31].…”

“…Further, "lifestyle similarities" between a non-injector and an injector had resulted in the transition. Exposure to other IDUs as a factor influencing the transition to drug injection has been widely documented in other studies, as well (14,18,24,(28)(29)(30).…”
