Background: Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among adolescents in rural India is negatively influenced by myths and taboos which predispose them to infections which can be dispelled by health education by experts or peers. The study aimed to demonstrate the relative effectiveness of direct health education over peer led health education on MHM.Methods: A longitudinal follow up intervention study recruiting 486 school going adolescent females divided in three groups I, II and III was conducted. Group I received peer led, while group II received direct health education and group III was control. Pre and post intervention scores of participants were compared.Results: Direct intervention group demonstrated highest improvement in number of participants having good MHM scores (p<0.05). Mean MHM scores of direct intervention group participants were the highest among all the three groups (p<0.05). Knowledge score of direct intervention group was significantly higher than group 1 (p=0.001) and group III with no difference in practice scores between group I and II (p=0.147).Conclusions: Direct health education as an intervention is more relatively effective than peer led in MHM of adolescent females.

Background: Girls in India are disadvantaged even before their birth. For a girl child, life is a constant fight for survival, growth and development from the time she is conceived till she attains 18 years. Objectives were to study the socio-demographic profile of the rural adolescent girls to study gender bias experiences among rural adolescent girls and to assess association between sociodemographic characteristics and gender bias. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in three secondary rural government schools among rural adolescent girls in the age group of 12 to 16 years. Study participants were interviewed. Results: Total respondents were 157.29 (18.5%) said they don’t get immediate treatment for their health issues. The 153 (97.5%) respondents said their parents support them for their education. The 12 (7.6%) girls said their parents ask them to eat food after males in their families.145(92.45%) didn’t find any discrimination regarding food with them. The 92 (58.6%) said parents force them to do domestic work. The 87 (55.4%) of the respondents said relatives ask them to sit properly and not according to their comfort. Only 19 (12.1%) said parents tell them to do puja regularly and keep fasting for religious reasons. The 88 (56.1%) respondents said that they have restrictions in going out. The 51 (32.5%) respondents said they have been verbally abused or beaten.Conclusions: Gender bias still exists among rural community. It is critical to intervene during early adolescence if gender equity is to be established. Promoting gender equality and empowerment of girls will help to diminish gender inequity in the long-term.

ObjectivesAge at menarche is a marker of pubertal timing that may influence adult height and body proportions. Previous studies have shown that socioeconomic status can affect age at menarche and growth patterns in different populations. This study aims to examine the associations between age at menarche, socioeconomic status, height, and leg length in a sample of Igbo ethnicity.MethodsThe study used data from questionnaires and anthropometric measurements of 300 female students aged 18–25 years. Study tested the hypotheses that earlier menarche is associated with shorter stature and shorter leg length, and that these associations are modified by socioeconomic status using nonparametric analysis.ResultsMean age at menarche was fluctuating around 12.84 ± 1.40 and 13.59 ± 1.41 years with school girls and grew 3.0 cm taller per year birth cohort. The study also found that girls with earlier menarche were shorter adult height (162.51 ± 6.00) compared with girls who have menarche at a later age. The linear regression coefficients (bs) ranged from 0.37–0.49 in later year birth cohort and 0.37–0.44 in early year birth cohort for height. The effect of age at menarche on leg length was similar to the relation between age at menarche and birth cohort height.ConclusionThe study will contribute to the understanding of how pubertal timing and socioeconomic status interact to shape adult health outcomes in a transitioning population.
