A publication and citation analysis of the Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, 1980-1990

Abstract: This paper discusses the citations to, and publications by, 10 members of the full-time academic staff of the Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield. during the period [1980][1981][1982][1983][1984][1985][1986][1987][1988][1989][1990]. It is shown that departmental publications are cited by a very wide range of organisations and in many countries, with more citations in the social-science literature than in the science literature. The journals in which publications or citations occur are in… Show more

“…This technique is now a well established approach to mapping the bibliometric structure of academic disciplines (Bayer, Smart, & McLaughlan, 1990;Bradley, Willett, & Wood, 1992;Cronin & Davenport, 1989;Culnan, O'Reilly, & Chatham, 1990;Lievrouw, 1988;Martyn, 1975;McCain, 1990;Oppenheim, 1995Oppenheim, , 1997Paisley, 1990;Small & Garfield, 1985;White & McCain, 1998).…”

“…More generally, the data from these three studies seem to support Seglen's (1992, p. 635) persuasively argued thesis that skewedness "is an inevitable statistical phenomenon that cannot be altered by intervention." Both Cronin and Davenport (1989) and Bradley et al (1992) examined the distribution of citations across the three citation indices. Their findings were virtually identical, with 63.5% and 63.40/o, respectively, appearing in the SSCP.…”

“…Both of these studies used straight counts (first author only). Most recently, Bradley et al (1992) conducted an 1 l-year publication and citation analysis (1980)(1981)(1982)(1983)(1984)(1985)(1986)(1987)(1988)(1989)(1990) of the Department of Information Studies at Sheffield University, using whole counts (each author). In the U.S., there have been relatively few citation-based studies of the field, the preference seemingly being for perception studies *To whom all correspondence should be addressed.…”

“…Previous studies have looked at the publications of, and citations to, members of the academic staff [110] and research students [111] Table 1, and there were another four that received at least 75 residual citations. Of the four publications in Table 1 These are hardly surprising, covering as they do most of the major journals where chemoinformatics articles appear; the two information science journals appear in this core as they both contained review articles with many citations to work at Sheffield.…”
