A psychometric evaluation of the Beck Depression Inventory–II.

Abstract: with respect to internal consistency, factorial validity, and gender differences. Both measures demonstrated high internal reliability in the full student sample. Significant differences between the mean BDI and BDI-II scores necessitated the development of new cutoffs for analogue research on the BDI-n. Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses indicated that a 2-factor solution optimally summarized the data for both versions of the inventory and accounted for a cumulative 41% and 46% of the c… Show more

“…The study used the Dutch translation validated by Van der Does (2002b). The BDI-II has been found to be a valid indicator of depression and shows good diagnostic discrimination (Dozois, Dobson & Ahnberg, 1998). Participants were presented with items related to symptoms of depression and asked to choose for each item the statement that better described how they have been feeling during the past 2 weeks (including the current day).…”

“…The BDI-II has been shown to have acceptable reliability and validity (Dozois, Dobson, & Ahnberg, 1998). The ]BDI-II was also included to assess the specificity of the SASCI to social anxiety rather than to global improvement.…”

“…The cut-off score for a scale to distinguish psychopathology can vary in different situations and populations (Beekman et al, 1997; Brennan, Worrall-Davies, McMillan, Gilbody, & House, 2010; Cheng & Chan, 2005; Dozois, Dobson, & Ahnberg, 1998; Geisser, Roth, & Robinson, 1997; Hinz & Brähler, 2011; Hiroe et al, 2005; Kugaya, Akechi, Okuyama, Okamura, & Uchitomi, 1998; Lasa, Ayuso-Mateos, Vázquez-Barquero, Díez-Manrique, & Dowrick, 2000; Matsudaira et al, 2009; Wada et al, 2007). Therefore, we could not reliably derive the same diagnosis with different scales in different study populations.…”
