A psychological approach to diagnosis.

Abstract

T his book is intended as an essential resource for mental health practitioners and educators around the world who will implement the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Clinical Descriptions and Diagnostic Requirements for ICD-11 Mental, Behavioural and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (CDDR; WHO, 2024) in their clinical practice, teaching, and training. This book is not intended to replace the CDDR and does not duplicate their text. Rather, it is intended as an important tool to be used together with the CDDR to facilitate understanding as well as accurate and skillful implementation of the International Classification of Diseases-11th Revision (ICD-11) classification of mental, behavioral and neuro developmental disorders in health care and other clinical settings.A Psychological Approach to Diagnosis: Using the ICD-11 as a Framework offers a structured approach to implementing the CDDR in clinical practice that is vital not only for practitioners and trainees in psychology but also for mental health professionals in psychiatry, nursing, social work, and other disciplines who aim to deliver high-quality, empirically informed mental health care. A psychological approach to diagnosis is one that focuses on psychological mechanisms and principles as an aspect of diagnostic practice and case formulation, regardless of professional discipline. It considers the psychological factors-including cognitions, emotions, and behaviors-involved in the development and maintenance of each major grouping of mental disorders and their linkage with treatment considerations.
