A psycholinguistic model of natural language parsing implemented in simulated neurons

Abstract: A natural language parser implemented entirely in simulated neurons is described. It produces a semantic representation based on frames. It parses solely using simulated fatiguing Leaky Integrate and Fire neurons, that are a relatively accurate biological model that is simulated efficiently. The model works on discrete cycles that simulate 10 ms of biological time, so the parser has a simple mapping to psychological parsing time. Comparisons to human parsing studies show that the parser closely approximates th… Show more

“…Later, Redish et al combined the two cognitive maps in 1998 to make symmetric and asymmetric connections coexist. There have been many promising works about neural coding and the cognitive map in the recent years (Han et al 2014; Duch and Dobosz 2011; Strauss et al 2010; Sato and Yamaguchi 2009; Huyck 2009; Wagatsuma and Yamaguchi 2007). And there are also many wonderful pioneering researches on neural dynamics model which set up a framework for the theory and application of neural system model (Adeli and Park 1998; Park and Adeli 1995, 1997; Adeli and Karim 1997; Senouci and Adeli 2001; Adeli and Kim 2001; Tashakori and Adeli 2002; Ahmadkhanlou and Adeli 2005).…”

“…This is a cognitive model of parsing implemented in neurons (Huyck, 2009). Context free parsing requires variable binding of some sort, and in this model, binding was done by short-term potentiation.…”

“…However, recent models show that neurally grounded approaches can parse linguistic streams (Huyck 2009) and embed symbolic parsing processes within temporally continuous neural dynamics (beim Graben et al 2008b). The conceptual mapping from these dynamics onto the DFT is therefore feasible.…”
