This work is concerned with modelling, analysis and implementation of embedded control systems using RT-DEVS, i.e. a specialization of classic discrete event system specification (DEVS) for real-time. RT-DEVS favours model continuity, i.e. the possibility of using the same model for property analysis (by simulation or model checking) and for real time execution. Special case tools are reported in the literature for RT-DEVS model analysis and design. In this work, temporal analysis of a model exploits a translation in Uppaal timed automata for exhaustive verification. For large models a simulator was realized in Java which directly stems from RT-DEVS operational semantics. The same concerns are at the basis of a real-time executive. The paper describes the proposed RT-DEVS development methodology and clarifies its implementation status. The approach is demonstrated by applying it to an embedded system example which is analyzed through model checking and implemented in Java. Finally, research directions which deserve further work are indicated.

Concurrent programming is conceptually harder to undertake and to understand than sequential programming, because a programmer has to manage the coexistence and coordination of multiple concurrent activities. To alleviate this task several high-level approaches to concurrent programming have been developed. For some high-level programming approaches, prototyping for facilitating early evaluation of new ideas is a central goal.Prototyping is used to explore the essential features of a proposed system through practical experimentation before its actual implementation to make the correct design choices early in the process of software development. Approaches to prototyping concurrent applications with very high-level programming systems intend to alleviate the development in different ways. Early experimentation with alternate design choices or problem decompositions for concurrent applications is suggested to make concurrent programming easier. This paper presents a survey of programming languages and systems for prototyping concurrent applications to review the state of the art in this area. The surveyed approaches are classified with respect to the prototyping process.

This paper proposes a methodology for the development of distributed real-time systems. The methodology consists of the Hierarchical Communicating Real-Time State Machines (H-CRSM) modelling language, and the VIOLIN toolset. H-CRSM combines Statecharts constructs with CSP-like timed communications. VIOLIN provides a visual environment supporting in a seamless way all the life-cycle development phases of an H-CRSM system. Temporal validation rests on assertion checking during system simulation. Code generation is based on Java and a customizable runtime. The practical use of H-CRSM/VIOLIN is shown by an example.
